2006 - WENDY'S HIKING ADVENTURE IN THE GRAND CANYON!!!

Greetings!

Let me tell you, the summer heat here in Phoenix may slow some people down, but not me! I’m busy training to hike the Grand Canyon this fall. Yes you read that correctly! I’ll be hiking and sweating it out through the hottest months as I train for a 6 to 7 hour hike in the Grand Canyon - for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s, Hike for Discovery - on October 6-8, 2006.

Hike for Discovery is a non-profit fundraiser that prepares hikers to experience the canyon and fundraise to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Society provides funding for research and patient programs to educate, support and provide hope for those fighting for their lives. I have committed to raise $2800 to help advance the Society’s mission.

Research efforts are critical, because blood cancers kill more children in the United States than any other cancer and, surprisingly enough, blood cancers strike even more adults than children. An estimated 747,465 Americans are living with blood cancers. Approximately 110,960 will be diagnosed with one of these blood cancers this year and an estimated 55,100 will die.

My life has been touched by a number of people who have been diagnosed with one of these blood cancers.

Jim Andrus: My daughter’s birth father fought for 24 years and sadly lost the fight in 1998. My daughter, who I gave up for adoption in 1973 and I were reunited in 1998 but sadly not in time for her to meet her birthfather.

Jennifer Hartman: A vibrant 24-year-old woman who is married to a good friend. She was diagnosed upon returning from her honeymoon.

Roberta Frechette: A delightful woman I met through the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

The Society supports more than 200 researchers, providing financial assistance to patients, sponsoring scientific conferences around the country, producing educational materials and videos with more than 50 support groups nationwide. Because the Society receives no federal funding, they depend on us for continued support of these needed programs. I have committed to help the Society raise funds to find cures and treatments for leukemia and related diseases to improve the lives of those affected. I am asking you to please help me with this ambitions task.
